Latase deficiency in Healthy Korean Children

Abstract
The Radiographic method of diagnosing intestinal lactase deficiency during consecutive routine upper gastrointestinal examination was assessed. In the present study, we report the results of a clinical study on the incidence of lactase deficiency in a group of asymptomatic healthy Korean children. The sample group consisted of 20 males and 20 females with a range in age from 10 to 11 years.
A total of 40 cases given a colloidal barium (100 ml) to with 25 gm of lactose had been added. In the addition to the routine study, a film was taken one hour after the examination.
The radiographic findings in lactase deficiency were always apparent on the 90 minute film Criteria previously described by Laws et al. (13) were used for the radiographic evaluation.
The features used in diagnosis were dilatation of the small bowel, apparent dilution of the Barium-lactose mixture in the small intestine, and transit of the mixture to the colon on the ¡°90 minutes film.¡±
All three features were required for a diagnosis of lactase deficiency.
Of 40 cases, 11 (27.5%) showed all three findings of lactase deficiency and 17 (42.5%) one or two abnormal findings.
Thus, the total incidence of lactase deficiency, complete or partial, as revealed by Barium-Lactose test was 70%.
This suggests that environmental factors may be important in the pathogenesis of lactase dificiency in Korean children.
